LEE COUNTY
Perched at the “entrance” to Virginia, Lee County is a land of beauty and history. Nestled in the western tip of Virginia and bordered by Tennessee and Kentucky, the residents of Lee County enjoy a quiet, scenic place to live, away from the many problems of the big city. In a geographically diverse county that has long been home to extensive activity in both agriculture and mineral extraction, spectacular rural scenery awaits visitors along the Crooked Road. Visitors will also be traversing the same paths where Cherokee and Shawnee Indians once trod, followed in the mid-18th century by legendary explorers Dr. Thomas Walker and Daniel Boone. A hundred years later, during the Civil War, Jonesville’s courthouse was burned and Cumberland Gap switched hands four times. Today, the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail crosses the length of the county, carrying the traveler through a charming county whose residents remain proud of their heritage and welcome the visitor to enjoy the county’s past, present and future. Travel Tips: While you are traveling through Lee County, don't miss the small town of Cumberland Gap, half of which is actually in Tennessee. Visitors can see the actual geographic location where settlers left the East to travel through into the wild, unexplored West. State parks, breathtaking views, and numerous historical attractions (including the chance to stand in three states at once) are all found here. The town itself its unbelievably quaint, especially the Olde Mill B&B. (This B&B is technically in Tennessee, but the parking lot is in Virginia, so it counts for this guide.) You won't regret the detour! |
